DRAGON DANCING

The WCSCC Dragon Dance team comprises members (Chinese and non- Chinese) between the ages of 13 to 50+. The group have quickly developed an international skill base of this traditional art form and currently perform at various locations around the lower and mid North Island, and have also competed internationally with the worlds best performers in Hong Kong at the World Luminous Dragon Dance competition during January 2010. Having returned from this competition, the committee have identified an opportunity to introduce younger members into this art form.  View a daylight Dragon performance here.   You will see the troupe performing at various events/festivals around the city including Night Noodle markets, private corporate functions, city wide parades.

LION DANCING

The WCSCC Lion Dance troupe was established in 1999, and started with a group of boys who were interested in learning this traditional and popular form of entertainment. The boys first performed at the opening of the Speech and Cultural Day in August 1999.  View a lion performance below:

Since then they have performed at a number of community events including the Festival of Asia in 2001, the IRB Rugby Sevens Parade, and in every Chinese New Year celebrations since its inception in 2002 to present. They have continued to learn the intricacies of this dance  and have made great progress. The boys are supported by a dedicated group of children and teenagers who provide the music. The Lion Dance Troupe has expanded to include young girls and boys aged from 5 years old.

The Dragon and Lion troupe perform through out the community at many events and for private business groups/functions.   If you would like to find out more about this exciting art/sport, please contact Vince Sue.

CHINESE DANCING

The Centre has Chinese dancing for girls aged from 5 to 13 years in the summer months.  Each year our dance troupes spend a lot of time preparing to perform on stage at the Chinese New Year Festival in Wellington.  They also perform at other Chinese New Year and public events through the summer months. For photos of our dance troupes see the gallery.

Our troupes dance to traditional Chinese folk songs taught to them by our teenage members who have performed the dances themselves for WCSCC in earlier years.  In recent years we have had three dance troupes aged 5-7 years, 8-10 years and 11-13 years.

Our groups are available to perform from January to May.  If you are interested in a performance for your function or event please contact Juliet Young.
