In the early 1970’s members of the Chinese community formulated a vision to build a community facility for Wellington Chinese. After several years of intensive fund raising and planning, construction commenced and the project came to fruition with the opening of the Wellington Chinese Sports and Cultural Centre in 1977. Our forefathers’ vision to have a permanent hub for the wider Wellington Chinese Community has enabled multiple generations to continue to build their understanding of their heritage and maintain links to their culture and language. We hold true to the original vision continuing to offer a range of cultural activities from traditional dancing, tai chi, lion dance and dragon dancing to Cantonese language school and Chinese Pre-School (Yah Yih Yun). Our social activities of ball room dancing and line dancing are especially popular, and sport is a big part of our club identity with basketball, volleyball and pickleball catering for all levels of skill, from social to competitive participation.We are always on the lookout for new activities which our club can get behind, support and encourage our club members to join in. While unashamedly we promote our focus on being a Chinese club, we welcome anybody who wants to be an active member of our club.New members are welcome to be part of the Centre family.
