At the WCSCC basketball has always been a very popular sport and was pivotal in the original establishment of the centre. We continue with this popular sport by having regular Sunday practices for all grades and sexes starting from Biniball (3-4 yrs) through to seniors. These practices typically start early April running through to September. We encourage parents to participate by either coaching or to help manage teams - get involved!
We run and participate in a number of tournaments throughout the season including Easter Tournament, Queens Birthday Tournament, Goodwill Games, Kapiti Hoop Club and Dragons Tournament. Main coaching contact is Grant Young
Our participation rates for the pre college age continue to be very strong with anywhere between 50-60 kids aged joining in our four group practices on Sundays. We welcome new players to come along and no you don't have to be Chinese to participate! We encourage "friends of the centre" memberships. We continue through with College grade, and open (adults) grade too.
Miniball is basketball for children between ages 4 to 12 years (Intermediate age). Miniball is run by a committee of parents who actively plan and manage the events throughout the year.
The activities include:
coaching about 50 - 60 kids every Sunday morning from 9:30am to 12pm during the winter season.
overnight "camp" stays at the Centre where the kids get up to minor mischief and then have breakfast at McDonalds the next morning
hosting our own invitational miniball tournaments
playing in tournaments organized by either other Chinese communities or external clubs and
our annual Prize giving (swimming pool) evening.
Miniball is not only about basketball, as one of our objectives is to get the kids to mix socially, to build their confidence and to learn about our culture through mixing with other Chinese kids and parents.
Teams are mixed, and for the older age groups, the players are streamed according to their skill level. We teach individual ball skills and teamwork using fun drills (or press-ups for those that misbehave :) ). Practices are 1 to 1½ hrs long.
Main coaching contact is Grant Young
Basketball follows on from intermediate age, and is split into two age groups - Under 18's for those attending College and Mens & Womens Open for players over the age of 18 years old. Training is on Sunday afternoons during the winter season in preparation for the two main tournaments listed below. We usually have at least 2 or 3 mens teams and 1 womens team. Most players also play for their school team, and number of them are Wellington age group rep players. We welcome young Chinese people to attend our Sunday practice sessions and join one of our mid week WBA league teams.
MENS AND WOMENS OPEN TEAMS
Any players over the age of 21 can play in the open grade. Trainings are on Sundays during the winter season pre tournament. There are two main tournaments that we participate in, Queens Birthday typically played first weekend of June, and Dragons tournament typically played middle weekend of September. The other major tournament is NZCA Easter tournament played in the four main centres of Wellington. Contact us for more info.
