Basketball

The Centre has one of the best basketball facilities in the Wellington region and a long history of competition in the Wellington Basketball league, as well as various national and regional Chinese invitation tournaments.

On a Sunday, the club devotes its whole gym facility exclusively to The Centre's basketball program.

  9:30am to 11:30 am Miniball (8-10 years)
  11:00am to 12:30pm Intermediate Miniball (11-12 years)

Miniball

Miniball is basketball for children between ages 4 to 12 years. Miniball is run by a committee of parents who actively plan and manage the events throughout the year. The activities include:

  • coaching about 50 - 60 kids every Sunday morning from 9:30am to 12:30pm
  • overnight "camp" stays at the Centre where the kids get up to minor mischief and then have breakfast at McDonalds the next morning
  • hosting our own invitational miniball tournaments
  • playing in tournaments organized by either other Chinese communities or external clubs and
  • our annual swimming pool evening.

Miniball is not only about basketball, as one of our objectives is to get the kids to mix socially, to build their confidence and to learn about our culture through mixing with other Chinese kids and parents.

The different grades for players are:

  Biniball for under-5's
  Tiniball 5-7's
  Miniball 8-10's
  Intermediate 11-12's

Teams are mixed, and for the older age groups, the players are streamed according to their skill level. We teach individual ball skills and teamwork using fun drills (or press-ups for those that misbehave). Practices are 1 to 1½ hrs long.

Basketball; College, Mens and Womens

We welcome young chinese people to attend one of our Sunday practice sessions and join one of our mid week WBA league teams.

Basketball follows on from miniball, and is split into two age groups - Under 18's for those attending College and Mens & Womens Open for players over the age of 18 years old.

Under 18 Boys & Girls
Practices are designed to help players solidify the fundamentals learnt at miniball level. Stepping up the level of awareness for the game, players also learn valuable on the court skills. For those players new to basketball at this level, we also help with the fundamental skill and rules of the game.Practices are run for 2 hours.

Many of our players who have come up through the miniball and Under 18 system play in their school or college teams. With some players reaching representative level for Wellington or even New Zealand.

Mens & Womens Open
Practices are open to those aged over 18 and are designed to help players improve and vary their skills.

TOURNAMENTS
We hold our own basketball tournament over Queens Birthday weekend for all age groups and enter other Tournaments run by various Chinese clubs and associations throughout the lower North Island throughout the year. We also enter teams into the Wellington Basketball Association's local mid week league.
